Our Story

There was no place on Monhegan to get even an ice cream cone after dark.
 Our sugar speakeasy fixed that!

Back in 2022, as my pal Cyn and I were jonesing for a slice of apple pie on a cold March night, she said "Melanie, you should open some sort of bakery - and you could serve it right out that side kitchen door", as she pointed to the island across the kitchen. "It'd be like that clandestine cookie place in Salem Mass."

"What's that called?" I asked?

"Goodnight Fattys" she said.

"Okay.  We'll be Nite Nite"

And with that, the vision of a sugar speakeasy with homemade ice cream topped by bottomless sprinkles... award winning chocolate chip cookies... and all my family favorites was born!

So I got bakin'.   I was flipping through in my cookbook for Mom's cobbler recipe when I found my paternal grandmother's specialty: General Robert E Lee's Lemon Cake (a sure first for this northern isle, I imagined).  That reminded me of my old friend Abby's carrot cake.  Then a birthday girl requested red velvet.  And a guest suggested a blueberry chocolate extravaganza.  I took ideas from revered bakers like Ina Garten and Dorie Greenspan and added specialities I had picked up on my winter travels - the Chesapeake's 8 layer Smith Island cake -- a 22-layer crepe cake from my favorite cafe in Princeton.    And the menu grew...

Then one day that first July, I was growing a little weary of the red-velvet-carrot-lemon rotation, and had an idea!  What if I just did PIES one night?

That first Pie Night I created 8 pies - old fashioned coconut cream, a southern style banana cream, bittersweet chocolate tart and island rhubard with an all-butter lattice crust, lemon meringue with homemade curd, a warm lemon tart from Isle au Haut, and of course - an island staple - Maine blueberry (with a hint of nutmeg).

Little did I know how crazy Mainers got over pie!   The line went out the door and around the corner of the house.

In the height of this rush, 2 young couples walked up and stood at the counter, unable to agree on which slices to sample.  I finally said "Well, if you can't decide, I guess we could do a flight."

A Flight?!   Yes!  Half slices of your 3 favorite pies, on a board, with whipped cream firewalls, for 15 bucks.

We eventually even added a FATTY FEST!  That's all you can fit on a dinner-size paper plate for $20.

As my old friend Cyn says:  "There are no calories on Monhegan" 😊

I can honestly say that FATTYS is the easiest way to create and share joy that I've experienced in a long, long time.

I am so grateful to you for following the path to our clandestine cake den, and coming in to join the fun.

Thank you for bringing your special something to our FATTY family ❤️
